Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, Adam Naseer Ibrahim, has stated that while criticism of the Government is a fundamental right, it should not extend to actions or narratives that harm the State or undermine national interests.
He made the remarks during the People’s National Congress (PNC) door-to-door campaign held in the Galolhu North constituency, attended by the President.
Minister Naseer underscored that democratic societies allow room for criticism of those in power, but drew a clear distinction between holding a government accountable and engaging in conduct that damages the country’s standing. He warned that actions which tarnish the Maldives’ reputation could have lasting consequences for citizens and future generations.
He further emphasised that while governments are temporary, the State is enduring and must be safeguarded at all times. In this regard, Minister Naseer highlighted that the current Administration is working within the framework of the Constitution to uphold public trust and protect the rights of citizens.
Minister Naseer also expressed concern over the spread of misleading narratives that distort facts and risk harming both the public and the State, noting that such actions run counter to the broader national interest.
His remarks follow recent public discourse surrounding statements made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu regarding the conflict in Middle East, which some media outlets and opposition figures have reportedly misrepresented.
Additionally, Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel has indicated that certain groups are attempting to mislead the public regarding the upcoming referendum scheduled for 4 April, which seeks to gather public opinion on holding presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day.
