Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has inaugurated two newly established ice plants in Dhaalu Atoll’s Bandidhoo and Meedhoo.

The initiative, implemented under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to ensure easy access to ice for fishermen, was contracted to the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO). The project includes a 30-tonne ice plant and a 50-tonne ice storage facility in each of the two islands.

According to the Ministry, the new facilities will help resolve long-standing challenges faced by fishermen in obtaining ice for preserving their catch, thereby increasing fishing efficiency and productivity.

Minister Shiyam stated that the establishment of these facilities will provide a significant boost to the fisheries industry in Dhaalu Atoll, contributing to higher income for fishermen and stimulating local economic growth.

The new ice plants are expected to enhance storage capacity, reduce operational difficulties for fishing vessels, and promote sustainable fisheries development across the region.
