The Maldives Immigration has formally introduced an e-visa system for migrant workers, ending the use of physical visa stamps nationwide.
The e-visa service was initially unveiled on 10 November and has now come into full effect. Under the new regulations, the only recognised work visa for migrant workers will be the e-visa issued to each individual. This replaces the previous requirement for physical visa stamps in passports, a procedure that is now entirely discontinued.
All unexpired work visas stamped in passports before 23 November have been automatically converted to e-visas within the immigration system as the new rules came into force. Physical visa stamps will no longer be accepted as valid, with each e-visa’s validity directly linked to the corresponding work permit.
For new arrivals, entry permission under a work visa will be granted only to migrant workers who hold a valid e-visa. Similarly, those departing the Maldives on a work visa must possess an active e-visa.
Migrant workers entering the country under a work permit must first obtain an Entry Pass issued by the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology. Upon arrival, responsibility shifts to the designated employer, who must be registered through the Expat Online system and apply for the work visa within 15 days. Employers will also be responsible for ensuring the continued validity of their employees’ e-visas following the system’s automatic conversion.
As of today, individuals can verify the status of their work visas through the portal at www.immigration.gov.mv/visa/status.
