The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has announced that production of canned tuna for next year’s Roadha Hadhiyaa programme will be completed in time for Ramadan.

The Government has decided to provide one case of canned tuna to every household as part of the Roadha Hadhiyaa programme, and preparations for the distribution are already underway.

MIFCO, which is producing the canned tuna for the programme, said it began production on 27 October last year. The company reported that 33 per cent of the work has been completed so far, with the goal of finishing production by the second week of January. MIFCO added that production levels are based on the quantities supplied during this year’s Roadha Hadhiyaa and that preparations for next Ramadan began well in advance.

Last Ramadan, the Government distributed 111,231 cases of canned tuna under the programme. This included 50,519 cases for households in the Malé area and 60,712 cases for households across the atolls.

The Roadha Hadhiyaa initiative was first announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at an event marking the one-year anniversary of the Administration. In 2024, the programme provided each household with 10 kilograms of basmati rice and 10 kilograms of flour.

In addition to food assistance, the Government has also been offering electricity bill discounts during Ramadan. The President has announced that every household billed at the domestic rate will receive a maximum electricity bill of MVR 400 during next Ramadan.
