Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage Adam Naseer Ibrahim has said that nearly 85 percent of the work required to nominate the Maldives’ coral stone mosques for inscription on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage List has now been completed.

He made the remarks in an exclusive interview with MMTV while discussing the Administration’s achievements over the past two years. The Minister noted that the ongoing work is being carried out in collaboration with the National Institute for Maldivian Heritage Research and the National Center for Cultural Heritage.

The Government has taken over a process that has been ongoing for nearly 14 years and is pursuing it with a renewed approach, he said. The Minister added that repeated meetings had been held with the UNESCO team to identify existing challenges and possible solutions.

Speaking on the technical work involved, he said teams have been visiting several mosques to gather necessary scientific information, and documents have been prepared to support the submission.

The Minister stated that the remaining work is on track to be completed before the January deadline.
