President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reiterated the Maldives’ commitment to integrity, transparency and accountability, commemorating International Anti-Corruption Day with a renewed call to strengthen good governance across the nation.

In his message, the President described the Maldives’ accession to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) in 2007 as a solemn national obligation. He stressed that systemic corruption threatens the rule of law, hampers sustainable development and undermines democratic institutions, reaffirming the Administration’s zero-tolerance policy.

President Dr Muizzu highlighted several key initiatives being implemented to prevent corruption and improve institutional integrity. These include the Maldives 2.0 digital transformation programme to modernise public service delivery and reduce bureaucratic inefficiencies, as well as efforts by the Anti-Corruption Commission to advance asset recovery through model legislation and amendments to core laws such as the Penal Code.

He also underscored broader preventive measures, including the 20-year National Development Plan aligned with the National Anti-Corruption Plan, the ‘Himmi’ Corruption Risk Self-Assessment Toolkit for public institutions and State-Owned Enterprises, and the establishment of a dedicated Anti-Corruption Academy to train professionals nationwide.

Acknowledging the vital role of civil society and UNCAC review mechanisms, the President said international cooperation and public participation remain essential. He added that the engagement and integrity of young people continue to inspire confidence in the nation’s future.

President Dr Muizzu concluded by emphasising shared responsibility in the fight against corruption, calling on all citizens to remain vigilant and uphold honesty and transparency to strengthen governance and ensure a fair, impartial justice system.
