President reaffirms commitment to modernising fisheries on National Fishermen’s Day

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his commitment to modernising the fisheries sector and expanding opportunities for fishermen on National Fishermen’s Day.
In a message shared on his X account, the President extended greetings to fishermen and their families. He said one of the main objectives of the Government is to expand the fishing industry, increase production and raise the income of fishing families. The President also added that the Government aims to strengthen the contribution of fisheries to the national economy through further modernisation and improved opportunities for those working in the sector.
President Dr Muizzu also reflected on the deep historical connection between Maldivians and fishing, noting that since the earliest settlements, the people of the Maldives have relied on the sea for food and livelihood. He said fishing remains one of the most respected professions in the country, rooted in the diligence, skill and traditions of Maldivian communities.
In a similar message issued for the occasion, First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also extended greetings to fishermen and their families. She expressed appreciation for the enthusiasm, courage and dedication of Maldivian fishermen and said she hopes to see continued growth in the prosperity and profitability of the fisheries sector.
National Fishermen’s Day is celebrated annually on 10 December.
