Government spends over MVR 222 million on scholarships in 2025

The Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development has reported that more than MVR 222 million was spent in 2025 under various Government scholarship schemes.
According to statistics released by the Ministry, a total of 205 new students were enrolled under Government scholarships during the year. This included 120 female students and 85 male students. During the same period, 180 students successfully graduated.
The Ministry further noted that across 2024 and 2025, a combined total of 411 students received Government scholarships. Of these, 262 were female and 149 were male. A total of 441 students graduated during the two-year period.
At present, 602 students are pursuing studies under 93 scholarship programmes in 20 countries. This group comprises 388 female students and 214 male students.
The scholarship schemes include the High Achievers’ Scholarship Scheme, which is awarded to students who achieve five A grades or more in A Level and Higher Secondary Certificate examinations, including Dhivehi and Islam. The Presidential Scholarship, considered the most prestigious Government scholarship, is granted to students who obtain five A* grades in the same subject categories.
Further scholarship opportunities are available through programmes funded by both the Maldivian Government and foreign governments.
