The Maldives has participated in the review of its combined sixth and seventh periodic reports under the Convention on the Rights of the Child, during a session held by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child in Geneva from 12 to 13 January 2026.
The Maldives became a party to the Convention on 11 February 1991. The combined reports outlined measures taken between 2016 and 2021 to implement the Convention’s obligations, including legislative, policy, and institutional developments.
Over two sessions, the Maldivian delegation responded to questions from Committee members on progress made since 2016 in advancing and protecting children’s rights.
Addressing the Committee as Head of Delegation, Ahmed Usham emphasised that children remain a national priority, underscoring the Government’s commitment to ensuring every child grows in dignity, safety, and with a voice that is heard. He reaffirmed that the Convention continues to guide Maldivian laws, policies, and development efforts, with a focus on strengthening systems and creating safe, inclusive environments for children to thrive.
The delegation also included Ali Ihusaan, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, alongside senior officials from the Attorney General’s Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Social and Family Development, the Ministry of Education, and the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva.
The Committee is expected to issue its concluding observations and recommendations following the review, based on the reports submitted and the information shared during the session.
