Speaker of the Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla, has paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of the Parliament of India, Om Birla, during his visit to New Delhi.
At the meeting, Speaker Abdul Raheem praised the organisation of the 28th Conference of Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth, noting that it was an important initiative by the Lok Sabha to strengthen cooperation among legislatures.
The Speaker highlighted the long-standing bilateral relations between the Maldives and India and discussed ways to further enhance parliamentary and institutional cooperation. He also expressed appreciation for the training programmes conducted by the Lok Sabha for staff of the People’s Majlis under a memorandum of understanding between the two parliaments.
Discussions also focused on strengthening ties between the People’s Majlis and the Lok Sabha. Om Birla highlighted the progress made by the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE), particularly in the digitalisation of the Indian Parliament. He reaffirmed India’s willingness to share its experience in digital innovation and other key areas with the Maldives.
