The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) conducted its primary elections for the upcoming Local Council Elections and Women's Development Committee (WDC) Elections on Friday under an environment that clearly reflected the Government’s commitment to democracy, political tolerance and media freedom.
The primaries were held nationwide without restriction, including across the Greater Malé Region at multiple public schools such as Majeedhiyya School, Galolhu School, Hiriya School, Iskandhar School, Ghazee School, Kaamil Didi Primary School and Muhyiddin School. The Government placed no obstacles on access to venues or logistics, allowing the MDP to freely carry out its internal political process.
Notably, State media PSM News provided coverage of the MDP primaries, further demonstrating the Administration’s respect for pluralism and equal media access. The inclusion of opposition political activities on State platforms stands in sharp contrast to repeated claims by the MDP that the Government suppresses dissent or restricts media freedom.
The Administration’s approach reflects a clear departure from past practices, where opposition parties were often denied visibility and access to public spaces. Today, State land continues to be made available for peaceful political activity, and State media routinely covers opposition events.
Against this backdrop, the MDP’s continued narrative accusing the Administration of eroding democratic values appears increasingly disconnected from reality. The facts on the ground show an open political environment where opposition parties are able to organise, campaign and receive national media coverage without interference.
In contrast, the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) demonstrated strong organisational capacity and public confidence during its own primaries held on 27 December. Party officials reported the highest voter turnout ever recorded in an internal party election in the Maldives.
The high participation in the PNC primaries was cited by party representatives as clear evidence of preparedness and unity ahead of the Local Council Elections, reinforcing the party’s position as the dominant political force at the grassroots level.
As MDP struggles to translate rhetoric into genuine public support, the Administration continues to demonstrate through action its commitment to democracy, stability and inclusive governance under the leadership of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
