The Government has begun seeking consultancy services to plan and develop picnic islands in each atoll, to improve social wellbeing and expand family-friendly public spaces nationwide.
The initiative was announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his visit to Alifu Alifu Mathiveri. Residents of several islands raised concerns about the lack of accessible public spaces for families to spend leisure time during the President's tour of all inhabited islands. In response, the President announced an island would be developed in every atoll for recreational and picnic purposes, following necessary studies and planning.
The Ministry of Social and Family Development has announced that it is seeking a consultancy partner for the Picnic Island Development Project. According to the ministry, interested parties must first register through the e-portal by 2:00 p.m. on 21 January. Bids are required to be submitted via email to [email protected] by 2:00 p.m. on 25 January, while the submission window for project cost estimates will remain open until 10:00 a.m. on 28 January.
The project aligns with efforts to strengthen social bonds, promote family relationships and improve quality of life for residents across the atolls and is expected to help ease congestion in the Greater Malé Region by providing additional recreational options in the atolls.
