The People’s National Congress (PNC) mayoral candidate, Major General (Rtd) Moosa Ali Jaleel, has affirmed that he will work closely with the Government to address the most pressing needs of Malé residents if elected.
Speaking at the inauguration of his campaign office, Jaleel said his priority would be to ensure the effective delivery of essential services, highlighting housing as one of the most urgent issues facing residents. He said he would fully support Government efforts aimed at resolving long-standing challenges in the capital.
Jaleel assured he would focus on providing services to residents around the clock and work to improve Malé City for all residents, without discrimination. He said his vision is to build a city that is happier and better suited to the needs of its residents.
Reflecting on the city’s governance history, Jaleel said Malé City did not meet residents’ expectations for nearly a decade following the introduction of city councils in 2011. He noted that a turning point came in 2021, when President Dr Mohamed Muizzu was elected mayor.
Jaleel highlighted that President Dr Muizzu’s mayoral tenure marked a period of significant improvement in municipal services, with long-standing issues addressed and increased social and community activities introduced across the city. The mayoral candidate said he intends to build on the example set by President Dr Muizzu.
Describing Malé as one of the most densely populated cities in the world, Jaleel said he has a clear understanding of residents’ concerns and expectations. He also highlighted recent community meetings held by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, describing them as an example of people-focused leadership.
Jaleel said attending the meetings was an emotional experience for him, particularly given his many years in national service. He said that after retiring, his experience, discipline and sense of responsibility led him to feel a renewed duty to stand alongside President Dr Muizzu in serving the public. He added that his decision to enter politics was driven by a desire to continue contributing to the country using the skills and experience he gained through years of service.
Drawing on his extensive background in national service, including his tenure as Chief of Defence Force and Defence Minister, Jaleel said he has carried out every responsibility entrusted to him with dedication and in the interest of the country and its people, and pledged to bring the same spirit and determination to the role of mayor if elected.
