The Jumhooree Party (JP) has decided to contest the upcoming local council elections only in the Maamigili constituency, while supporting the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) in all other constituencies.

The decision was taken at a JP council meeting held today, where the party agreed to field candidates for the island council and Women’s Development Committee seats in Maamigili for the elections scheduled on 4 April.

JP said it will not contest in other constituencies and will instead cooperate with the PNC nationwide, excluding Maamigili. The council endorsed this arrangement, with a majority of members voting in favour of working alongside the ruling party in the remaining constituencies.

The meeting was chaired by JP Leader and Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim, who presented the proposal to limit the party’s contest to Maamigili while aligning with the PNC nationwide.

Meanwhile, other political parties have announced their preparations for the elections. The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has revealed its list of candidates, while The Democrats have opened nominations for those wishing to contest under their banner.

The local council and Women’s Development Committee elections will take place on 4 April, with voting scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m..
