President and First Lady honour heroes on Martyrs’ Day

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed have paid tribute to Sultan Ali VI and the nation’s fallen heroes on the occasion of Martyrs’ Day (Shaheedhunge Dhuvas), marking the 482nd anniversary of the Sultan’s martyrdom while resisting Portuguese colonial forces in 1558.

In his message, President Dr Muizzu described Sultan Ali VI as a brave national hero whose courage and skill continue to inspire generations, noting that his sacrifice in defence of the nation’s independence will remain forever etched in Maldivian history. 

He also commemorated the young men who fought for the country and those martyred in national service, expressing gratitude for their dedication and sacrifice. The President emphasised that the spirit of Sultan Ali VI and other determined patriots will uphold the dignity of every generation, adding that with the grace of Almighty Allah, the Maldives will remain independent.

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also commemorated the day with a message honouring the sacrifice of Sultan Ali VI. She described him as a symbol of courage and resilience, extended greetings on the occasion of Martyrs’ Day, and prayed that the Maldives would always remain at peace and free.

The annual observance of Martyrs’ Day serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by Sultan Ali VI and countless others who defended the nation’s independence, inspiring future generations to uphold the country’s dignity and sovereignty.
