State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has begun increasing electricity generation capacity nationwide in preparation for the upcoming month of Ramadan and the annual peak demand season.
Electricity consumption typically rises during Ramadan and further increases during the hotter months. In response, STELCO has commenced the installation and commissioning of additional generator sets across several islands to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
A new 600 kilowatt generator set has been installed and commissioned in Vaavu Thinadhoo, increasing the island’s total generation capacity to 1,539 kilowatts. In Alifu Alifu Mathiveri, a newly installed 600 kilowatt generator has raised the island’s power generation capacity to 1,650 kilowatts.
STELCO has also commissioned a 1,000 kilowatt generator set in Alifu Alifu Ukulhas, increasing its total capacity to 2,564 kilowatts. In Alifu Alifu Thoddoo, an additional 1,000 kilowatt generator has been installed, bringing the island’s total generation capacity to 3,592 kilowatts.
In Kaafu Guraidhoo, a new 1,000 kilowatt generator set has been commissioned, raising the island’s electricity generation capacity to 2,960 kilowatts.
The company is also strengthening power supply in the Greater Malé Region. STELCO has decided to install 15 additional generator sets in the Malé area and has already commissioned an extra 1,200 kilowatt generator set in Villimalé.
STELCO has been dispatching new generator sets to islands since December 2025 as part of its preparations to meet increased electricity demand during Ramadan and the peak season, with the aim of maintaining reliable and uninterrupted electricity services across the country.
