The Managing Director of the Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), Abdul Matheen Mohamed, has ensured that construction of a new 5,000-tonne water generation system in Hulhumalé will be completed next month.

The project is part of a wider initiative to strengthen water services across the Greater Malé region.

MWSC began work last August on a facility designed to produce 10,000 tonnes of water per day. One 5,000-tonne plant was completed last year, while the second unit is now nearing completion. Minister stated that the company’s top priority remains ensuring water security for residents, noting that production capacity has already increased by 5,000 tonnes over the past year.

The company is also expanding storage and distribution infrastructure. A 10,000-tonne water storage tank, the largest ever installed in the Maldives, was commissioned in Hulhumalé last year, raising the city’s total storage capacity to 22,600 tonnes. MWSC is preparing to install two more tanks, each with a capacity of 13,000 tonnes, later this month.

A reverse osmosis plant capable of producing 1,000 tonnes of water per day was installed and brought online in June last year. MWSC said the establishment of maintenance, repair, and operations facilities is a crucial step toward providing uninterrupted, sustainable access to clean drinking water and safe sewerage services in Malé and Hulhumalé.
