President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has conveyed condolences to President of the Republic of the Philippines Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr following a ferry accident in the southern Philippines.
In a message sent, President Dr Muizzu expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and the many individuals reported missing after the ferry capsized off the coast of Basilan. On behalf of the Government and people of the Maldives, he extended heartfelt sympathies to the Philippine Government, the people of the Philippines and the families affected by the tragedy.
The President also wished a swift recovery to those injured in the incident and expressed hope for the continued success of search and rescue operations underway to locate those still unaccounted for.
The incident occurred on early Monday when the ferry MV Trisha Kerstin 3, travelling from Zamboanga City to Jolo Island, sank off the coast of Basilan province. Philippine authorities said the vessel was carrying over 340 passengers and crew members at the time of the incident.
According to the Philippine Coast Guard, at least 18 people have been confirmed dead, while dozens were initially reported missing. Rescue teams, including coast guard and naval vessels, aircraft, helicopters and local fishing boats, were deployed to the area to assist with search and rescue efforts. More than 300 passengers and crew members were rescued and taken to nearby ports and medical facilities.
Search and rescue operations are continuing as authorities prioritise locating those still missing. The Philippine Coast Guard said a marine casualty investigation would be conducted once rescue efforts conclude.
