Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed has outlined the company’s strategic priorities aimed at strengthening the role of Velana International Airport as the Maldives’ primary international gateway.
Speaking during the Aviation Forum 2026 – Connecting Maldives, CEO Shareef highlighted MACL’s ongoing focus on expanding airport capacity, diversifying revenue streams, strengthening operational resilience and improving passenger services. The discussion was held under the theme “The New Journey in 3 Parts: Capacity, Revenue and Efficiency.”
The CEO stated that the airport’s development strategy is focused on preparing VIA for future demand while improving the overall passenger experience. He highlighted ongoing infrastructure initiatives and efforts to strengthen cargo operations and support the continued growth of the aviation and tourism sectors.
He also outlined MACL’s digital transformation initiatives, including the expansion of self-service check-in facilities, self-baggage drop services, immigration e-gates, biometric systems, digital wayfinding and mobile boarding solutions. According to MACL, the initiatives are intended to improve operational efficiency and streamline passenger movement throughout the airport.
He further stressed the importance of expanding non-aeronautical revenue sources through commercial partnerships, retail services, lounges and food and beverage operations as part of efforts to strengthen the airport’s long-term sustainability. He also highlighted the need for continued coordination with airlines, tourism stakeholders and business partners to maintain international connectivity and respond to evolving aviation industry challenges.
