Over 200,000 tourists have visited the Maldives so far this year, making 2026 the fastest year on record to reach the milestone.

Latest statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment show that 200,801 tourists had arrived in the Maldives as of 28 January. This represents an increase of 3.9 per cent compared to 193,174 arrivals recorded during the same period last year.

The highest number of tourist arrivals in a single day this month was recorded on 11 January, when 9,596 tourists entered the country. Current data indicates that the Maldives is receiving an average of 7,171 tourists per day.

Velana International Airport remains the primary entry point for visitors. Among other gateways, Maafaru International Airport recorded the highest number of arrivals, with 714 tourists entering the country so far this year.

In terms of source markets, Russia has emerged as the leading contributor with 26,965 tourists, marking a shift from previous years when China held the top position. However, arrivals from China are rising rapidly, with 18,531 Chinese tourists recorded so far this year, and the market is expected to regain the top position in the coming months.

Tourist arrivals are expected to continue increasing as the peak season progresses. February has historically recorded the highest number of arrivals in recent years, and similar trends are anticipated in 2026.
