The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has provided temporary shelter to 140 people affected by a fire at Hiyaa Tower 5 in Hulhumalé Phase II, as repair works continue on damage to the building’s sewerage system.
According to National Disaster Management Authority, the fire, which broke out at around 7:00 p.m. on Friday, caused extensive damage to the tower’s main sewerage pipe, rendering sanitation facilities unusable in 38 apartments. As a result, residents from 30 affected units were relocated to temporary accommodation. NDMA said those assisted include 49 men, 48 women and 43 children, with food and other essential support provided.
The fire was brought under control by the Maldives National Defence Force Hulhumalé Fire Station. NDMA confirmed that no physical injuries were reported in the incident.
Repair works to restore the damaged sewerage infrastructure are currently being carried out by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC). NDMA said assessments are ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage, while HDC and MNDF are investigating the cause of the fire.
Response and recovery efforts are being coordinated among several State agencies, including MNDF, the Maldives Police Service, Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) and STELCO, to expedite repairs and ensure the safety and welfare of affected residents.
NDMA has advised anyone requiring assistance related to the incident to contact the authority’s emergency hotline at 115.
