President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stressed the urgent need to strengthen awareness, prevention and collective action to support those affected by cancer.

Marking World Cancer Day on Wednesday, the President said he honours cancer survivors and those currently fighting the disease, noting that their courage continues to inspire. He said cancer claims many lives each year, highlighting the importance of coordinated efforts to improve prevention, early detection and support systems.

The President also highlighted measures taken by the Administration to improve access to cancer care services. He referred to the recent launch of chemotherapy services at Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital, noting that the service brings essential treatment closer to patients outside Malé and helps ease both emotional and financial burdens.

In addition, the President referred to ongoing work under the National Cancer Control Plan 2022–2026 to strengthen prevention, early detection, treatment and palliative care, highlighting measures such as the national cancer registry, improved primary healthcare services, tobacco control initiatives and continued cooperation with international partners.

The President also expressed appreciation for healthcare professionals, civil society organisations and non-governmental organisations for their continued work in supporting patients and families through care, guidance and assistance.

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also marked World Cancer Day by calling for solidarity with patients, survivors, caregivers and families affected by cancer.

In her message shared on X, the First Lady said no two cancer journeys are the same, stressing the importance of recognising the lived realities of patients and survivors with compassion and empathy. She urged the public to unite with purpose, honouring every story, spoken and unspoken, and working together through awareness, prevention and support.

World Cancer Day is observed annually on 4 February, bringing together people and organisations worldwide to raise awareness about cancer, promote prevention efforts and encourage actions aimed at saving lives.
