The People’s Majlis has referred the nomination of Uz Rifath Abdulla to the Elections Commission to Parliament’s Independent Institutions Committee for review.

The referral follows the President’s submission of Uz Rifath’s name to the People’s Majlis on Tuesday to fill a vacancy on the Elections Commission.

The vacancy arises as the term of current Elections Commission member Dr Mohamed Zahir is due to expire on 21 February. In anticipation of the vacancy, the President’s Office opened applications for the position on 7 January.

Under the law, members of the Elections Commission are appointed after the President submits nominees to the People’s Majlis from among applicants for the post, with appointments subject to parliamentary approval.

The Elections Commission comprises five members.
