Development works have commenced at the Tsunami Monument area in Malé City, with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) undertaking the project to rehabilitate the long-neglected public space.
The commencement of works was confirmed by Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib, who said sheet piles previously installed on the western side of the site had sustained damage, resulting in sand erosion in the area. He said renovation works are now under way to repair the quay wall and restore the surrounding area to make it safer and more accessible to the public.
The Tsunami Monument, originally located in Henveiru, was relocated to Thin Ruh Park in Maafannu during the construction of the Sinamalé Bridge. Since its relocation, the site has fallen into disrepair, with sections of the surrounding infrastructure deteriorating over time due to environmental exposure and lack of maintenance.
The Minister said the rehabilitation of the Tsunami Monument area forms part of the Administration’s efforts to improve public spaces and recreational areas in Malé City. He noted that upgrading parks and open spaces is aimed at enhancing the urban environment and improving access to safe communal areas for residents.
Several public spaces in the capital are currently undergoing refurbishment as part of this wider urban renewal initiative. Renovation works are ongoing at Sultan Park and Republic Square, while upgrades are also under way at Rasfannu, one of the most frequently visited public areas in Malé City.
