Asphalt layering works have been completed in the market area under the second phase of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu Development Project.

The asphalt was laid on Tuesday night, and the upgraded section is expected to be opened for public use within the coming week.

Construction under the second phase began in mid-December. The project is being implemented by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), covering the stretch from the Malé Local Market area to the North Harbour.

A total of 260 metres has now been asphalted. MTCC stated that a substantial portion of the phase has been completed. The next stage of works will include road markings, installation of traffic signage and completion of utility network connections.

Under the project, a segment from the Local Market to the North Harbour is being redeveloped, with the road widened to six metres. In total, 1,088 metres of roadway from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the North Harbour is being upgraded.

The first phase of the development, covering 140 metres, has already been completed and opened. Once the second phase is finalised, the project is expected to modernise road infrastructure in the market area, improve pedestrian safety, strengthen stormwater drainage to minimise flooding, and reduce congestion around the commercial harbour, facilitating smoother movement of goods within Malé City.
