Maldives Correctional Service releases 27 inmates on parole

The Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has revealed that 27 inmates were released into the community on parole last year.
Statistics released by MCS on services provided to inmates show that the correctional authority received 241 parole applications in 2025. Of these, 189 applications met the eligibility criteria, while 43 were deemed ineligible. Eight applications remain under review and one was referred for legal advice.
According to the statistics, 86 applications were submitted to the Parole Board during the year. The board approved 42 applications, while 44 were rejected. In total, 27 inmates were eventually reintegrated back into society on parole.
The Correctional Service also reported that healthcare services were widely utilised by inmates. A total of 12,887 medical consultations were conducted for general health concerns, while 2,160 specialised consultations were also recorded during the year.
Communication services were also provided to inmates through telephone and video calls. Maafushi Prison recorded 5,169 phone calls, including 150 video calls, while 2,742 phone calls and 47 video calls were made from Hulhumalé Prison. At Asseyri Prison, a total of 2,662 phone and video calls were recorded.
In terms of inmate transportation, Maafushi Prison recorded the highest number of transfers, with 3,927 trips by land and 3,191 by sea, along with one air transfer. Hulhumalé Prison recorded 1,749 land transfers, 425 sea transfers and four air transfers, while Asseyri Prison recorded 242 land transfers and 230 sea transfers during the year.
