President sends condolences after tragic Dhigurah fire incident

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has conveyed condolences following a tragic fire on the island of Alifu Dhaalu Dhigurah that claimed the lives of five Bangladeshi nationals.

The early morning blaze, which occurred on 13 March 2026 at an accommodation block, also left two other Bangladeshi nationals injured.

In a letter addressed to Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, President Dr Muizzu expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy on behalf of the Government and people of the Maldives. He conveyed heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families and the government of Bangladesh, adding that the thoughts of the Maldivian people remain with all those affected.

The President also expressed hope for the swift and full recovery of the two individuals currently receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained in the fire.

Acknowledging the valuable contributions of the Bangladeshi community to Maldivian society, President Dr Muizzu noted that the Maldives shares in the grief caused by the incident.

He also confirmed that relevant authorities have been instructed to carry out a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire.
