Construction of 75 housing units in Meemu Dhiggaru has begun as part of a housing development project being carried out by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). According to the company, work on the project is currently at the foundation stage.
Each housing unit will have an area of 1,000 square feet and will include three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room, kitchen, laundry area and storage room.
Dhiggaru has a population of around 1,300 residents and covers an area of approximately 10 hectares. Due to coastal erosion affecting large parts of the island, the community has faced land shortages. To address this issue, the Government previously carried out land reclamation and coastal protection projects, reclaiming 25 hectares of land, constructing a 700-metre rock revetment, a 138-metre outer protection wall, and installing a 332-metre geo-bag revetment.
During a visit to Dhiggaru in September last year, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said the 75-unit housing project would be expanded further. He also announced plans for additional infrastructure projects on the island, including the development of a 30-bed hospital, improvements to the harbour, and construction of a new school building with nine additional classrooms and a multipurpose hall.
