The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has said a fire that broke out at a warehouse near the Galolhu Mortuary in Malé has now been brought under control, with no injuries reported.
In a post shared on social media, NDMA said the warehouse was completely destroyed in the incident. The house where the fire occurred and six adjacent houses were temporarily evacuated due to heavy smoke, but residents have now been allowed to return to their homes after the situation was brought under control by the MNDF Fire and Rescue Service.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said the fire was reported at around 10:30 a.m. at a building located ina narrow lane near the Galolhu Mortuary. The building was a two-storey tiled structure used to store goods and was reportedly unoccupied at the time of the incident.
Authorities earlier advised residents in the surrounding area not to gather near the site due to smoke and to cover their nose and mouth when outdoors. People experiencing breathing difficulties or vomiting were also advised to seek medical attention.
