Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems being developed across seven islands of the Maldives are nearing completion, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Environment.

The ministry said preparations are underway to commission a combined 11 megawatt solar PV system under a single Power Purchase Agreement, with Kulhudhuffushi City among the islands included in the project.

The initiative forms part of the Government’s efforts to increase the use of renewable energy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels for electricity generation. Officials noted that expanding solar energy capacity would help reduce environmental impacts while supporting sustainable economic development.

The ministry said that the project is currently in the final stages of commissioning, while grid upgrade works and battery energy storage systems (BESS) are also being developed in the participating islands. The solar PV systems are being established in Kulhudhuffushi City, Baa Eydhafushi, Lhaviyani Hinnavaru, Thinadhoo City, Fuvahmulah City, and Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo in Addu City.

The investments are being implemented through the ASPIRE and ARISE renewable energy projects, which combine public and private sector investment. Under these initiatives, the Government aims to develop 43 megawatts of solar PV capacity and 40 megawatt-hours of battery storage across 21 islands in the Maldives.

The ministry said the projects will contribute to the Government’s target of generating 33 per cent of the country’s electricity from renewable energy sources by 2028.
