Laboratory services have been officially launched at Alifu Alifu Himandhoo Health Centre, marking an expansion of diagnostic services available to residents of the island.

The service was inaugurated by Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim at a special ceremony held on the island on 18 March. The event was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Health, members of the Himandhoo Island Council, and staff of the health centre.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Nazim highlighted the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to expand laboratory services across the Maldives. He noted that the Government aims to establish laboratory facilities in 76 islands this year, adding that services have already been introduced in 12 islands, including Himandhoo.

The minister also met with the senior management team of the Himandhoo Health Centre following the inauguration and discussed challenges faced in delivering healthcare services on the island, as well as possible measures to address them.

Residents of islands without laboratory facilities have often had to travel to neighbouring islands within the atoll to obtain diagnostic tests. With the introduction of laboratory services in Himandhoo, residents will now be able to access basic testing and blood sample services locally, improving access to healthcare and reducing the need for travel.
