The Maldives and Australia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance a bilateral air services agreement, removing restrictions on airline operations between the two countries.

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen said the agreement allows airlines to operate flights without limitations effective immediately.

In a post shared on social media, the minister stated that the MoU marks a step towards strengthening aviation cooperation between the Maldives and Australia. He noted that the removal of operational restrictions is expected to open up new opportunities in travel, tourism and trade between the two countries.

The agreement was signed between the relevant aeronautical authorities of both countries, with officials highlighting its significance in enhancing connectivity and expanding international air services. Maldives Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) highlighted that the development reflects the long-standing bilateral relationship and continued collaboration in the aviation sector.

The Government has been undertaking efforts to improve national connectivity through air and sea transport, with a number of initiatives aimed at expanding international routes and strengthening partnerships. The latest agreement is expected to further support these efforts by facilitating easier access between the Maldives and Australia.
