The Elections Commission has relocated its election centre to the Social Centre and resumed the voter registration process following the warehouse fire last night.

The centre was moved after a fire broke out in a warehouse known as “Prime Godown”, located at the junction of Izzuddin Magu and Funuhiya Magu,  adjacent to the former Drug Court building. The Elections Commission suspended operations, secured all documents, and temporarily shifted the election process to the Social Centre as a precautionary measure.

The Elections Commission confirmed that political parties, candidates, and candidates' representatives are now signing the voters' register at the Social Centre. The signing will take place daily from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm and from 9:00 pm to midnight.

The Commission has assured that the fire will not disrupt any part of the election process, and that voter registration is proceeding as normal.

Candidates or their nominated representatives are required to sign the final register of eligible voters ahead of the 4 April elections. The Elections Commission opened the register for signatures on 17 March.

Three votes are scheduled for 4 April: Local Council elections, Women's Development Committee elections, and a referendum. According to the final registry, 150,370 men and 144,506 women are eligible to vote in the elections.

The Elections Commission has also decided to place 588 ballot boxes across the country for the elections. Of these, 180 ballot boxes will be placed in Malé City, 51 in Hulhumalé, 9 in Vilimalé, and 322 across the atolls. In addition, 21 ballot boxes will be placed in resorts, while five ballot boxes will be located in prisons.
