Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu has stated that regardless of what the MDP says, opposition also supports holding the presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day, aligning with the position of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).

Speaking on MMTV’s Dhiveheenge Raajje programme, Minister Rafiu said conducting the two main elections simultaneously would help reduce State expenditure and ease pressure on the national budget. He noted that the current gap between elections results in inefficiencies, limiting the Government’s ability to deliver services during that period.

The minister further stated that support for the proposal extends beyond party lines, with individuals holding differing political views expressing backing for the move. He added that the proposal is seen as a way to improve governance and ensure greater political stability.

Minister Rafiu added that there is growing public interest in the upcoming referendum on the issue, noting that many citizens view the change as beneficial for the country’s administrative and financial management.
