Minister of Defence Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon has stated that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East does not pose a military threat to the Maldives.

Speaking during a press briefing held today by a special Cabinet committee formed by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to assess the potential impacts of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the minister said the Government continues to uphold its policy of not allowing Maldivian airspace to be used for military operations by any country. He added that the situation does not currently present a direct security concern for the Maldives.

During the briefing, questions were raised regarding requests from foreign states to use Maldivian airspace. Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel said such matters are not publicly disclosed without the consent of the countries involved, noting that the Maldives maintains its international relations based on mutual respect.

The Government also reiterated ongoing efforts to strengthen national defence capabilities, with measures aimed at safeguarding the country’s maritime and airspace security and ensuring that no unlawful activities are permitted within Maldivian territory.
