President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Government intends to introduce dedicated legislation to establish a legal framework for the implementation of capital punishment in the Maldives.

Speaking at the press briefing today, the President stated that a significant number of individuals in the Maldives have exhausted all stages of the judicial process relating to capital punishment, and that the absence of a formal legal mechanism has prevented such sentences from being carried out.

President Dr Muizzu noted that previous administrations had pledged to address the matter but had not followed through. He emphasised that, as a 100 per cent Islamic nation, the Maldives has both a religious and legal obligation to uphold the principles of Islamic law, and that such matters are not subject to the discretion of any single authority.

The President further stated that the Attorney General’s Office is currently engaged in drafting the necessary legislation, with the intention of submitting the bill to Parliament during the current session. Once enacted, he said, the Government will proceed with the implementation of capital punishment in cases where all judicial requirements have been fully satisfied.

President Dr Muizzu added that the enactment of such legislation is essential to upholding justice and the rule of law in the Maldives, noting that an Islamic state has a duty to apply its legal principles consistently and in accordance with its constitutional and religious foundations.
