The Government has commenced procurement processes for the establishment of Public Works Units across the atolls, in efforts to strengthen infrastructure maintenance and create employment opportunities.
Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar said the Government is working to establish 19 Public Works Units and four mobile units, with recruitment plans for a total of 516 civil servants, including 456 staff for the permanent units and 60 for mobile teams. He noted that all employees will be hired under the civil service framework and provided with competitive salaries.
The minister said the initiative is expected to generate significant employment opportunities in the atolls, while reducing reliance on resources from Malé for infrastructure works. At present, machinery and technical personnel required for maintenance activities are often sourced from the capital, contributing to higher operational costs.
He added that land has been allocated in the selected islands for the construction of the units, including facilities to accommodate heavy vehicles and equipment. Approval has already been granted to recruit 141 staff, with further recruitment to follow as the project progresses.
Procurement of machinery for the units is also underway, with plans to acquire nine types of equipment, including excavators, loaders, graders, compactors and dumplorries. The total cost of the project is estimated at USD 9.1 million, with items expected to be delivered within the next two months.
The Government said the establishment of Public Works Units in the atolls is aimed at improving the efficiency of infrastructure maintenance, including roads and harbour works, while reducing long-term costs associated with transporting equipment and personnel from Malé.
