The Maldives has called on the international community to take decisive action against Israel’s actions, stating that they are undermining global peace and stability, during the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva.
Delivering the statement on behalf of the Maldives, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dr Salma Rasheed, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action, which recognises that all human rights are universal, indivisible, interdependent and interrelated. She stressed the need for collective international efforts to uphold these principles and maintain global stability.
The Maldives expressed concern over Israel’s actions in the region, stating that ongoing attacks and military operations have contributed to instability across the Middle East, including in Palestine and neighbouring countries. The statement highlighted the worsening humanitarian situation and raised concerns over alleged violations of international law.
During the session, the Maldives also condemned acts of violence and called for accountability, urging the international community to take concrete steps to address serious breaches of international humanitarian and human rights law. It further called for coordinated efforts to restore peace and ensure the protection of affected populations.
The Maldives additionally reiterated its call to combat all forms of discrimination and hatred, including anti-Semitism, while emphasising the importance of working collectively to promote peace, stability and respect for human rights globally.
