The Maldives has condemned the attack on Shajareh Tayyebeh Girls’ School in Minab, Iran, which killed 168 children, describing it as a serious violation of international humanitarian and human rights law.

Delivering the statement at an urgent debate during the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Maldives’ Permanent Representative Dr Salma Rasheed expressed concern over escalating conflict in the Middle East following military attacks involving Israel and the United States.

The Maldives said continued attacks have contributed to instability across the region, including impacts on Gulf countries, Jordan, Palestine and Lebanon, while stressing the need to end what it described as a culture of impunity that has allowed repeated violations of international law.

The government called on the international community to intensify efforts to de-escalate tensions, protect civilians and ensure accountability, particularly in relation to attacks targeting children and educational institutions.

The debate was one of two urgent sessions held at the Council this week, with the Maldives also participating in an earlier session addressing recent regional developments, reiterating its position in line with commitments under the UN Charter and international treaties.
