President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the decision by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) member Ahmed Niyaz to support the People’s National Congress (PNC) in the upcoming Local Council and WDC elections and referendum is a significant boost to the party.

Speaking during a PNC door-to-door campaign event ahead of the vote, the President described Niyaz as a recognised figure within MDP who has served the public and is accepted by the people, adding that his support carries importance in the current political context.

He expressed appreciation for the decision, stating that backing from individuals with experience and public support strengthens the party’s position as it prepares for the elections.

The remarks come as the opposition campaigns against the proposed referendum, while Niyaz has publicly expressed support for the vote; he previously served as a city council member and is also known as a former national football team defender and New Radiant player.
