Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), in collaboration with the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), is set to host a high-level webinar addressing the growing challenges facing the global tourism industry.
Titled “The Conflict Playbook for Travel – Adapt, Pivot, Lead (Maldives Edition)”, the session will be held on Thursday, 9 April 2026 at 1:00 pm.
The webinar comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, which have begun to impact global aviation networks, increase fuel prices, and influence international travel demand. Industry observers note that airspace restrictions in key transit corridors have led to flight rerouting and longer travel times, while jet fuel prices have risen significantly. The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) estimates global losses in visitor spending at around USD 600 million per day.
VMC said the initiative is part of proactive efforts to safeguard the Maldives’ tourism-dependent economy by equipping industry stakeholders with strategies to navigate the evolving global landscape.
The session will feature a keynote address by VMC Chairperson Abdulla Ghiyas, who is expected to outline the national perspective, including the potential impact on local tourism and the Government’s strategic response.
The webinar will also include insights from international experts. Michael Shoory, Head of APAC Tourism Analysis at Tourism Economics, will present data on demand trends and market shifts. Sarah Mathews, CEO of E-Tourism Frontiers, will discuss strategies for identifying alternative markets and adapting to rising costs, while Elizabeth Cook, Director of Marketing at the same firm, will focus on crisis communication and maintaining destination reputation.
The event will conclude with a live question-and-answer session, allowing participants to engage directly with the speakers.
VMC has invited tourism industry stakeholders to register for the session, describing it as an important opportunity to gain practical, data-driven insights during a period of global uncertainty.
