The People’s National Congress (PNC) has commended ongoing efforts to strengthen a responsible and independent media, while reaffirming the importance of maintaining a conducive environment for press freedom.

In a statement issued to celebrate World Press Freedom Day, the party extended greetings to media organisations and journalists, acknowledging their role in informing the public and supporting democratic processes. The PNC stated that access to accurate and verified information remains essential for citizens to make informed decisions.

The statement described press freedom as a key pillar of democratic governance, noting that a transparent and accountable State relies on independent journalism that reports truthfully and serves as a watchdog over institutions of power.

At the same time, the party emphasised that freedom of expression must be exercised responsibly, with due regard for individual rights and the broader public interest. It cautioned against the misuse of journalism in ways that could undermine social harmony or violate fundamental freedoms.

The PNC also reiterated its commitment to supporting the development of the media sector, including facilitating resources and training to enhance professional standards and ensure journalists remain equipped to navigate a changing media landscape.
