The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC) has stated that ensuring the safety of journalists and providing access to modern training remains a key priority for the Commission.
The Commission made the statement in a message issued to mark World Press Freedom Day.
In its message, the MMBC noted that the Maldives is ranked 108th in the World Press Freedom Index this year. It stated that while this reflects a change compared to the previous year, efforts are ongoing to improve the ranking further and strengthen the media sector.
The Commission stated that press freedom is not merely a concept confined to written expression, but a fundamental pillar of a peaceful society. It highlighted that press freedom plays a vital role in safeguarding human rights and supporting sustainable development.
The MMBC further noted that journalists serve as a crucial pillar in holding the State accountable and empowering the public, describing them as an essential fourth estate.
The Commission also highlighted ongoing efforts to advance the media sector in the Maldives. These include the introduction of a new code of conduct, as well as the development of updated regulations and frameworks aimed at strengthening financial independence and resilience within media institutions.
It added that press freedom carries responsibilities alongside rights, stressing that journalists and media professionals must adhere to established ethical standards when disseminating information.
Concluding its statement, the Commission reaffirmed its commitment to supporting journalists, addressing challenges faced within the media sector, and ensuring the protection of press freedom in the Maldives.
