Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed speaks at Addu Business Dialogue
Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed has said the country’s economic development can only be advanced through collective efforts despite differences in political views.
Speaking at the opening of the Addu Business Dialogue, Minister Saeed described the forum as an initiative expected to play an important role in Addu Atoll’s development over the next three years.
He said differing views on business, development and economic policy should not prevent discussions on national progress, adding that the dialogue was intended to create space for a wide range of perspectives.
Minister Saeed said the forum brought together Government officials, representatives of State institutions, local councils, the mayor, and members of the public interested in business and investment. He added that while political parties may differ in their approaches, all sides ultimately seek development, and forums for discussion are therefore necessary.
He also called for greater participation from small and medium-sized businesses, noting that many continue to face various challenges. He urged participants to use the platform to share ideas and propose practical solutions.
Minister Saeed said discussions held through the dialogue would contribute to policy papers being prepared by the Ministry of Economic Development for submission to the Cabinet, with the aim of addressing challenges faced in Addu.
He further encouraged participants to openly discuss issues affecting the city and propose solutions through consultation and cooperation.
Referring to recently introduced economic policies, Minister Saeed said the new Foreign Investment Act and the Free Trade Agreement signed with China were examples of measures developed through consultation, adding that policies shaped through dialogue are more likely to succeed.
Minister Saeed also said development projects currently underway in Addu are part of a pilot initiative linked to the Government’s target of transforming the Maldives into a developed country by 2040.
