President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that MVR 7 million will be allocated annually from the Maldives Green Fund to strengthen environmental protection and conservation efforts.

The President made the announcement in his World Environment Day Address, highlighting the importance of conserving the Maldives' fragile ecosystem for generations to come.

President Dr Muizzu said a lack of adequate funding remains one of the biggest obstacles to implementing environmental protection measures worldwide. To address this challenge, the Government has decided to dedicate MVR 7 million each year from the Maldives Green Fund to support conservation and environmental management initiatives.

He stated that the funding will be provided in addition to the annual budget allocated to the environmental sector and is expected to enhance the impact of environmental projects across the country.

The funds will be used for the protection and management of environmentally sensitive areas, conservation and restoration work, environmental monitoring, research, public awareness programmes and efforts to strengthen technical capacity within the sector.

President Dr Muizzu also noted that the funding would support programmes carried out in collaboration with civil society organisations and school environmental clubs to encourage greater public participation in environmental protection efforts.
