Preliminary results released by the Elections Commission show Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate Abdulla Sodhiq leading the North Hithadhoo constituency by-election by 62 votes.
The by-election was contested by Sodhiq and People's National Congress (PNC) candidate Ahmed Saeed. According to the results, Sodhiq received 1,375 votes, representing 51.15 per cent of ballots cast, while Saeed secured 1,313 votes, or 48.85 per cent.
A total of 4,121 voters were eligible to participate in the election, including 2,073 women and 2,048 men. Voting began at 8:00 a.m. and was scheduled to conclude at 4:00 p.m., but the Elections Commission extended polling until 5:00 p.m. due to long queues at several polling stations.
Seven ballot boxes were used for the by-election, including two in Malé and five in Addu City. Vote counting began shortly after polling stations closed, with counting in Addu City commencing at around 5:30 p.m. and counting in Malé beginning at approximately 5:40 p.m.
If confirmed, the result would see the MDP retain the North Hithadhoo seat. Despite the outcome, the ruling PNC would continue to hold a supermajority in Parliament with 74 members, while the MDP would have 13 members in the 93-seat People's Majlis.
