More than 95 per cent of the Maldives' greenhouse gas emissions come from the energy sector, according to the country's first Biennial Transparency Report (BTR1).
The report, submitted under the Paris Agreement, notes that despite the challenges of providing energy across a geographically dispersed island nation, the Maldives has made significant progress in increasing the use of renewable energy. According to the report, a total of 110 megawatts peak (MWp) of solar photovoltaic systems have been installed across the country.
The report also highlights the Government's target of generating 33 per cent of the country's electricity from renewable energy sources by 2028 as part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions and strengthen energy security. However, it notes that achieving the target will require continued support from the international community through climate financing, technology transfer, capacity-building initiatives and long-term cooperation.
The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy said the Maldives has successfully completed the Facilitative Multilateral Consideration of Progress (FMCP) process for its first Biennial Transparency Report under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The process allows countries to engage in dialogue on progress towards their climate commitments and share experiences in implementing climate action measures.
While the Maldives contributes only around 0.004 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, the report notes that the country remains among the nations most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. As a result, strengthening climate resilience and building adaptive capacity continue to be key national priorities, while the Maldives also remains active in international efforts to address environmental challenges.
