Deputy Mayor of Malé city, Ahmed Nareesh, has called for unity and solidarity in the aftermath of the devastating fire on December 12, 2024.

Speaking on MMTV's Bodu Khabaru programme, he emphasised the importance of supporting one another during this challenging time rather than creating divisions or fostering negativity.

Nareesh stressed the vital role played by the Malé City Council and the Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development, both of which were directly impacted by the fire. These institutions, he noted, handle critical and sensitive matters that affect many residents, making it essential to preserve public trust in their operations.

He highlighted the collaborative efforts between the City Council and the Housing Ministry to recover and safeguard essential documents following the fire.

However, Nareesh expressed concern over narratives suggesting inadequate efforts to safeguard these records, stating that such claims misrepresent the institutions and risk fostering division among the public.
