Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has been contracted to carry out the repair and maintenance of Government ambulances provided to islands across the Maldives.
The agreement was signed at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Health on 10 March where State Minister for Health Ismail Abdulla signed on behalf of the ministry, while MPL Deputy Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Mueen signed on behalf of the company.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office last week, Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim said that some ambulances previously delivered to islands needed to be replaced due to the lack of arrangements for proper maintenance in the past. He also noted that ambulances currently operating in some islands are in poor condition, highlighting the need for a sustainable system to ensure their upkeep.
Minister Nazim said the Government’s vision for the health sector is not only to provide resources but also to ensure that equipment and services are maintained effectively. As part of this approach, the Government plans to assign the maintenance of newly provided ambulances to a designated company.
The Ministry of Health has been distributing ambulances to islands as part of efforts to improve emergency medical services. In January 2026, ambulances were handed over to 56 islands, while additional ambulances have recently been provided to 14 more islands. The ministry has stated that ambulances will continue to be distributed to more islands in the coming months.
