Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zareer has expressed hope that degree-level courses will be introduced for inmates as part of efforts to expand educational opportunities within the prison system.

CP Zareer made the remarks while speaking at a certificate awarding ceremony for inmates who completed various courses conducted through the Institute for Correctional Studies (ICOST) of the Maldives Correctional Service.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Commissioner said the Government is undertaking a number of initiatives to improve prison operations and strengthen security. He also highlighted the importance of education and rehabilitation in preparing inmates to reintegrate into society.

Addressing the inmates, Zareer said imprisonment does not define a person's entire life and encouraged them to continue investing in their personal development. He said he was encouraged to see inmates participating in educational programmes with determination and confidence while working towards a better future.

Concluding his remarks, the Commissioner said he hopes degree-level programmes can be introduced in the future for both inmates and correctional service officers, further expanding educational opportunities within the prison system.
